Jones Fire Breaks Out Near Wickenburg, Forcing Evacuations and Closing Highway

A brush fire, named the Jones Fire, erupted near Wickenburg along the Hassayampa River on May 11th, burning 100 acres and leading to evacuations on the southeast side of town. Fire crews responded swiftly, but U.S. Highway 60 was shut down in both directions at milepost 11. Authorities issued a full evacuation order for homes between U.S. Highway 93 and Zabel Mine Road, and railroad tracks west of the highway to the east side. The American Red Cross set up a shelter at Wickenburg High School. Hassayampa Elementary School sent students to the high school for safety, and firefighters focused on protecting a nearby hotel and RV park. Arizona Public Service cut power east of the highway for safety, and crews deployed engines, a dozer, two large air tankers, and four single-engine ones. Water scoopers and planes were also called in for heat scans and intelligence. With assistance from Congress and Yavapai County teams, and heavy air support, firefighters are currently battling the flames.
