In 1888, the residents of Paulding County finally had enough with an abandoned canal and stagnant reservoir near Antwerp that was breeding mosquitoes and filling the countryside with the stench of dead fish. When the state refused to eliminate the problem, a mob took on the task - even as the Ohio National Guard moved in to stop them.
