We've all heard the popular theories explaining the clockwork cycle of glaciations that generally boil down to a series of overlapping eccentricities in the Earths' solar exposure. These Milankovitch cycles still don't entirely satisfy our need to explain the bistability of the system: what causes the Earth to regularly jump from glacial to interglacial over the course of a few tens to hundreds of years? Lance Weaver from Utah State Geology suggests the hypothesis that a true polar wander would neatly fill in the blanks, whereby some variety of mass imbalance would cause a true pole shift event that snapped the axis of the Earth between two stable barycenters. It would certainly explain why the periodic glaciers seem to be centered directly over Greenland instead of the North Pole.
