Who is the Rock Jesus Buids His Church On? - Matthew 16:18-27 (Session 33)
Description
What did Jesus mean when He said, “Upon this rock I will build My church”?
Matthew 16:18–27 contains several of the most debated statements in the Gospel. Jesus speaks about the rock, the church, the gates of Hades, the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and binding and loosing. Glenn and Steve work carefully through the context, the Greek wordplay between Peter and rock, the role Peter later plays in Acts, and the broader biblical picture of Christ as the foundation and cornerstone.
The passage also marks a major shift in Matthew. After Peter identifies Jesus as the Christ, Jesus begins explicitly preparing His disciples for His suffering, death, and resurrection.
Then He turns the lesson toward discipleship: deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.
What does that mean? And how do rewards for works fit with salvation by grace through faith?
