Two days after Christmas in 1928, 4-year-old Melvin Horst is playing in a vacant lot with a friend when he realizes its dinner time. "Goodbye, Bobbie. I got to go home now," he says. An hour later, all his parents find is a little red wagon abandoned in the front yard.
For the next year, local bootleggers and mobsters would use Melvin's disappearance to try and put each other out of business. Eight of them would see the inside of a jail before all of their tales were proved to be lies.
