Description

Six years ago Gavin Ashton was working as a chef in a North West pub. Watching the racing one afternoon at the Elephant and Castle in Bamford a friend suggested Gavin was the right size to be a jockey, a comment which triggered a new career for the 19 year old who had been on an academy course with Manchester City and dreamed of being a professional footballer. This week’s podcast covers Gavin’s incredible story from joining the British Racing School in Newmarket, despite having never sat on horse before, working as an apprentice with the legendary Sir Mark Prescott, Shaun Keightley, Ian Williams and since late 2020 with Classic winning trainer Roger Varian. Gavin reflects on his time with the four trainers and the support they have all given him. In 2021 Gavin tasted success riding eleven winners in Germany where he so nearly won a listed race in Hannover.
