A longer duration of undertreated depression is associated with poor longitudinal functional outcomes. Instead of cycling patients through monoaminergic antidepressant trials and cognitive behavioral therapy approaches, according to Dr. Kitay, providers should consider treatments like esketamine much sooner in the treatment course.
