Mega Edition: Ghislaine Maxwell And The Lawyers She Brought In To Defend Her (11/5/26)
Published 9 hours ago
Description
Following her arrest in July 2020, Ghislaine Maxwell assembled an experienced and expensive legal defense team to fight federal sex trafficking charges connected to Jeffrey Epstein's abuse of underage girls. Her attorneys included veteran criminal defense lawyer Bobbi Sternheim, Christian Everdell of Cohen & Gresser, and Jeffrey Pagliuca and Laura Menninger of the Colorado firm Haddon, Morgan & Foreman. Mark Cohen also participated in her pretrial defense. The team brought extensive experience handling complex federal criminal cases, high-profile defendants, and sensitive litigation involving serious allegations of sexual misconduct. Throughout the proceedings, Maxwell's lawyers aggressively challenged the prosecution's evidence, attacked the credibility of witnesses, contested the conditions of her detention, and repeatedly sought her release on bail. They also argued that Epstein's controversial 2007 non-prosecution agreement should have protected Maxwell from prosecution and challenged the government's ability to pursue charges involving conduct that occurred decades earlier. Despite their efforts, Maxwell was convicted in December 2021 and subsequently sentenced to 20 years in federal prison.
Following her conviction, Maxwell turned to another prominent group of attorneys to challenge the verdict through the federal appeals process. Her appellate team included Arthur Aidala, Diana Fabi Samson, and former New York Supreme Court Justice John Leventhal, who argued before the Second Circuit that Maxwell had been improperly prosecuted, denied a fair trial, and subjected to legal errors that warranted overturning her conviction. Their arguments focused heavily on Epstein's non-prosecution agreement, disputed jury selection issues, the statute of limitations, and alleged problems with the trial judge's instructions. However, in September 2024, the Second Circuit unanimously rejected the appeal and upheld Maxwell's conviction and sentence. Maxwell subsequently retained Miami-based criminal defense attorney David Oscar Markus, who pursued further challenges, including an unsuccessful petition to the United States Supreme Court, while also representing her in later dealings with federal authorities. Despite assembling successive teams of highly experienced criminal defense and appellate attorneys, Maxwell failed to overturn her conviction, demonstrating that even substantial financial resources and aggressive legal representation could not undo the verdict reached by the jury.
