Description

What happens when your brain is both one of your biggest creative assets AND the reason you can't seem to answer that one email?

In this episode of Mind Your Own Biz, I'm chatting with Erika Barrington, a therapist and fellow ADHDer, about the complicated, fascinating, sometimes frustrating experience of navigating life and entrepreneurship with an ADHD brain.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at 39, and even years later, I'm still discovering things about myself that suddenly make a whole lot more sense. So when Erika and I first connected through my business, I knew I wanted to bring them onto the podcast for a bigger conversation.

We talk about what happens beneath the surface of procrastination, overwhelm, and feeling stuck, including the shame, self-doubt, and emotional baggage that can build up after years of trying to do things the way everyone else seems to do them.

We also get into the freedom (ummmmm and challenges!) of running a business with ADHD, why our businesses sometimes need to take a back seat to the rest of our lives, and how rejection sensitivity can turn something as simple as a client email into a five-alarm fire in our brains. 😬🚨

And because I love a good creative tangent, we spend some time talking about PLAY! Why do we stop experimenting and having fun as adults? What if creativity didn't have to produce anything useful? And how can we bring a little more curiosity, imagination, and movement into our everyday lives?

✨ In this episode, we talk about:

  • Getting diagnosed with ADHD as an adult and reexamining your past through a different lens

  • Why ADHD challenges aren't always solved by another productivity hack

  • How entrepreneurship can offer freedom and flexibility while creating its own unique challenges

  • Recognizing when your business needs to move to the back burner during different seasons of life

  • Rejection sensitivity, emotional reactions, and the urge to overexplain or defend ourselves

  • Making room for creativity, low-stakes art, movement, and play without worrying about being good at something

  • Small ways to work with your brain, including visual reminders, tiny movement experiments, and personal playlists

We also talk Star Trek! 🀣
