Description
If you define masculinity as constant warfare, you are setting yourself up for emotional exhaustion in your marriage. Author Stephen Mansfield joins us to explain why the warrior script fails at home.
Many men believe that being against something is the same as going to war with it. In the Episode of American Masculinity we discuss how this mentality creates a divide in healthy relationships, leaving men drained and unable to offer the support their spouses actually need. It is possible to pursue mastery of yourself without treating your home life like a battlefield.
Stephen and I unpack why the warrior is just one model of manhood out of many, what military deployment cycles teach us about recovery, and why men who see themselves as the only line of defense never get to enjoy the family they’re protecting. We also get into what makes faith brittle versus strong, how to tell a healthy church from a cult, and why so many young men are drawn to rigid systems. Stephen also shares the simple car-door lesson from his father that first invited him into manhood, the divorce that cost him friendships, and how the fight in him carried him through cancer.

FACT-CHECK
One correction and one clarification this episode:
Deployment cycles: Tim said troops deploy for six months and then stay home for 18. That isn’t a rule. The Department of Defense goal is three times as much time home as deployed, with a floor of two. Many tours run longer than six months, especially in the Army, and units have spent long stretches below that floor. The principle holds: recovery time got built into policy because people stop functioning without it.
Young men and church: Tim said there’s been a huge spike in young men coming into the church. Some surveys show attendance rising among young adults, but Pew’s polling doesn’t find a national revival, and the gap between young men and women is closing largely because young women are leaving. The surge isn’t established.
