Lofstrom Loops and the Physics of Actively Supported Structures

Episode 63 Published 15 hours ago
Description

What if we could build structures that reach into space without relying on the strength of steel or concrete? From Lofstrom loops capable of launching spacecraft into orbit to towers stretching 100 kilometers into the sky, actively supported structures could fundamentally change what's possible in engineering.

In this episode of Entropy Rising, Jacob and Lucas explore the physics of active support, an engineering concept that uses continuously moving mass and momentum to support structures that would otherwise collapse under their own weight.

We start with the Lofstrom loop, a proposed 2,000-kilometer-long launch system suspended approximately 80 kilometers above Earth. By accelerating a continuous loop of material to incredible speeds, this structure could potentially launch people and cargo toward orbit while dramatically reducing the need for rocket propulsion.

We also explore Atlas pillars, skyscrapers that could theoretically extend into space, and actively supported bridges capable of spanning enormous distances without conventional supports.

How would these structures actually work? Could we build them using today's technology? And what happens if the systems keeping them standing suddenly lose power?

Join us as we explore the fascinating physics, engineering challenges, and potential applications of actively supported megastructures.
