In Part 2, Roger Wheelahan, principal at IFD Financial Planning, our in-house financial planning team, moves from trusts and capital gains tax to the structures doctors are asking about next. We recorded this in late September, so treat it as where things stand now.

We start with self-managed super funds. Roger explains what the end of limited recourse borrowing arrangements for residential property means, why you can still buy a residential property outright with cash in your SMSF, and why borrowing to buy commercial premises, including the rooms or medical centre a doctor works from, is untouched. He also clears up the $3 million threshold: it applies per member, a fund can have up to six members, and they don't have to be family.

Then we get into insurance bonds, which Roger calls his second favourite structure after super. He covers how a tax-paid bond works, what happens at the 10-year mark and if you die before it, and how one 80-year-old client used a bond after selling her farm. He also shares how you can take some capital out without breaking the 10-year rule.

If you've maxed out your super caps, or you're weighing up an SMSF and wondering what still works, start here.
