The Mexican Government And Their Hunt For El Mencho
Published 7 hours ago
Description
For more than a decade, the Mexican government conducted an intensive manhunt for Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, better known as El Mencho, the ruthless leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), who became one of the most powerful and elusive drug traffickers in the world. Mexican authorities repeatedly attempted to capture him through military operations, intelligence gathering, surveillance, and raids targeting his associates and suspected hideouts. One of the most notorious encounters occurred in May 2015, when Mexican security forces attempted to apprehend him in Jalisco, only to face heavily armed cartel gunmen who shot down a military helicopter with rocket-propelled grenades, killing at least nine service members and allowing El Mencho to escape. The cartel's willingness to launch military-style attacks against government forces demonstrated the extraordinary resources and firepower available to him. Despite authorities arresting numerous associates, including his son Rubén Oseguera González, El Mencho repeatedly avoided capture by relying on heavily guarded rural hideouts, loyal security personnel, and an extensive criminal network. Mexico eventually offered a reward of 30 million pesos for information leading to his arrest, while the United States increased its reward to $15 million in December 2024.
