Seek Out Supportive Style Energy: What To Do When Someone Criticises Your Outfit

Season 2 Episode 9 Published 1 day, 7 hours ago
Description

Have you ever had someone say something unkind about your outfit, and found that you just couldn't shake it off? In this episode, I'm unpacking why those offhand comments about our clothes can be so powerful — for better and for worse.

I share a few stories that have stayed with me for years: an ex-boyfriend's comment about my favourite white furry coat, a colleague's dig about my tights in an outfit I loved, and a mother-daughter moment at one of my pop-up shops that broke my heart a little. Then I flip it to the other side — the night I met my husband's closest friend for the first time and how one simple compliment about her earrings sparked a friendship that's now lasted 16 years.

I call this "supportive style energy," and I think it's one of the most underrated tools we have as women to lift each other up. I'll explain the difference between solicited and unsolicited style advice, why it's okay to simply turn down the microphone on comments that don't serve you, and how to be more intentional about surrounding yourself with people who champion your style rather than cut it down.

You'll Learn

  • Why unsolicited comments about our clothes can hit so much harder than we expect
  • The difference between solicited advice (helpful) and unsolicited criticism (rarely helpful)
  • How to "turn down the microphone" on voices that undercut your confidence
  • Why giving someone else a genuine compliment lifts your own confidence too
  • A real story of how one compliment sparked a 16-year friendship
  • Details on Amanda's free upcoming class to help you feel more vibrant, visible, and authentically you
