Wattleseed Chai - Tea Without Any Tea in It

Wattleseed Chai - Tea Without Any Tea in It

Published 15 hours ago
Description

This morning’s cup is wattleseed chai, a blend that steeps to a colour deeper than any chai with tea, yet contains no tea leaf at all. The richness comes from wattleseed and roasted chicory, with a cupboard of spices rising in the steam—clove, cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and a prickle of pepper at the edge. Almost every language calls tea some version of “tea” or “chai,” but here the name has outlived the leaf. What holds it together is everything around it: the warmth, the hour, the ritual. Sometimes what stays the same is not the parts, but the place they hold.
