In the first of a series with psychotherapist Dr Joseph Sansone, we dig into his new book, Psychopathic Authoritarianism, one of the best books I’ve read this year.

Joseph breaks down the dark tetrad: sadism, narcissism, Machiavellianism and psychopathy. He explains how these traits run through those in power, how they work through enablers in the wider population, and why sadism may be our worst human quality. We also cover surveillance, the media, the Covid years, the Federal Reserve, right wing populism, academia and student debt, and why fear is the master tool of control.

This isn’t a left or right problem. It isn’t rich versus poor, and it isn’t a class issue. Every human being has the capacity for both good and evil, and understanding the dark tetrad is essential if we are to recognise that evil and resist it, in those who rule over us and in ourselves. In Joseph’s view, no group is wholly innocent.
