Description
Welcome!
And thanks for listening.
In this solo episode, I wanted to share some of the fascinating research and insights I brought back from the recent Ketogenic Foundation conference. From the potential benefits of ketones for heart health and brain function to the latest research on ketogenic diets and chronic kidney disease, there is some exciting work happening in the field of metabolic health. How ketones may improve cardiac function in people with heart failure, how the brain uses ketones as an alternative fuel source as we age, and what long-term studies are showing about ketogenic diets, kidney function, and diabetes remission are just the tip of the iceberg.
I also address some of the questions and concerns I've received about our transition from a plant-based, high-fiber diet to a low-carbohydrate, high-fat ketogenic approach. We take a closer look at the research behind dietary fiber, including whether we really need as much as we've been told, how fiber affects digestion and nutrient absorption, and why some studies have found improvements in digestive symptoms when people reduce or eliminate fiber.
Finally, I share an update on my own health and some unexpected findings from my recent blood work. Despite improvements in my metabolic health, some of my glucose and insulin markers have raised new questions about my pancreatic function and the possibility of adult-onset autoimmune diabetes. I discuss why I'm pursuing further testing, what C-peptide can tell us, and why it's important to look beyond assumptions and evaluate each patient as an individual.
Thanks as always for listening.
