Description
When the Veil Grows Thin: Samhain & the Ancient Origins of Halloween
Every October, Halloween arrives with its familiar costumes, jack-o’-lanterns, haunted houses, and tales of things that go bump in the night. But beneath the festivities lies a much older story—one rooted in ancient traditions, the changing seasons, ancestral remembrance, and the mysteries of life and death.
What exactly is Samhain, and how did it influence the Halloween we celebrate today? Why is this time of year associated with the thinning of the veil between the living and the spirit world? And what might we discover when we look beyond the costumes and candy to explore the deeper meaning of this fascinating season?
Joining Henry Hawk on Rooted & Wild is Sharon Lynne, president of the Northern Arizona Black Hat Society, who has practiced the Craft for more than 40 years. Sharon follows an eclectic spiritual path, blending elements of various traditions into a personal practice deeply connected to the natural cycles of the Earth. A resident of Flagstaff, Arizona, for more than 26 years, she owns Victorian Moon Antiques & Enchantments in the city’s historic downtown district and leads a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the local magickal community.
Together, Henry and Sharon explore the ancient origins of Samhain, the evolution of Halloween, the folklore surrounding witches and spirits, and the spiritual significance of honoring those who have passed. They also discuss ancestral altars, seasonal rituals, divination, and meaningful ways to celebrate Samhain beyond the familiar festivities.
Along the way, the conversation invites us to consider our relationship with mortality, the wisdom of nature’s changing seasons, and how remembrance, reflection, and ritual can help us navigate the endings and beginnings of our own lives.
Whether you’re a longtime practitioner, curious about Pagan traditions, or simply fascinated by the history behind Halloween, this episode offers a thoughtful exploration of a holiday whose mysteries continue to captivate us.
Perhaps the greatest mystery of Samhain isn’t what lies beyond the veil, but what this season can teach us about the lives we’re living on this side of it.
