Why the Worst Case Feels Like the Realistic One
Published 11 hours ago
Description
You've been meaning to ask your manager about leaving at three on Thursdays for school pickup. Every time you think about it, the same short film plays: a flat face, a pause, a polite no. So you don't ask, and you tell yourself you're being realistic.
This episode looks at why the bad version gets the full production while the good one gets two seconds. Bad things tend to weigh more in the mind than good things of the same size, and researchers have found that we usually overestimate how hard a disappointment will hit and how long it will last. In one small study of heavy worriers, most of what people predicted never happened at all.
The obvious fix, just picturing it going well, has its own trap. What helps instead is a fairer hearing: weighing the worst, the best and the most likely outcome side by side, and letting the most likely one point to your next sensible step.
