Description
On June 18, 2023, the OceanGate submersible Titan suffered a catastrophic implosion while descending toward the wreckage of the RMS Titanic in the North Atlantic Ocean, killing all five people aboard and triggering an international investigation into one of the most notorious maritime disasters in recent history. The victims included OceanGate founder and CEO Stockton Rush, British billionaire Hamish Harding, French Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet, Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood, and his 19-year-old son, Suleman Dawood. The expedition was intended to take the passengers approximately 12,500 feet beneath the ocean's surface to explore the wreckage of the Titanic, with participants paying as much as $250,000 for the experience. Roughly an hour and 45 minutes into the descent, communication between the Titan and its support vessel, the Polar Prince, was lost, raising immediate concerns about the safety of those aboard. An international search-and-rescue operation involving American and Canadian authorities followed, capturing worldwide attention as rescuers raced against what was initially believed to be the submersible's dwindling oxygen supply. For several days, uncertainty surrounded the vessel's disappearance, with reports of underwater noises raising hopes that the occupants might still be alive. However, on June 22, a remotely operated underwater vehicle discovered debris from the Titan approximately 1,600 feet from the bow of the Titanic, confirming that the submersible had suffered a catastrophic failure. Investigators subsequently determined that the vessel's pressure hull had collapsed at approximately 10:47 a.m. on June 18, killing everyone aboard almost instantaneously. The tragedy was particularly disturbing because numerous engineers, deep-sea exploration specialists, and former OceanGate employees had raised concerns about the experimental vessel's safety long before its final voyage.
