#76 – Are Carbs TOXIC? Two Pharmacists Respond. (Rapid Fire Friday)

Published 6 hours ago
Description

Are carbohydrates toxic?

According to one commenter on our YouTube channel, Brian and Cory are apparently too scared to tell people with type 2 diabetes to stop eating ALL carbohydrates.

Their argument?

"Nobody needs to eat a single gram of carbs."

And here's the funny thing...

They're right.

Your body can produce the glucose it needs through a process called gluconeogenesis. You don't technically have to eat carbohydrates to survive.

But there's a pretty big difference between "not required" and "must be eliminated."

In this Rapid Fire Friday episode of the Diabetes Remission Roadmap, Cory and Brian tackle their first YouTube troll and a surprisingly important question about type 2 diabetes, carbohydrates, and metabolic health.

We discuss:

·       Why humans don't technically need dietary carbohydrates to survive

·       Why that doesn't automatically make carbs toxic

·       The pharmacist's favorite principle: the dose makes the poison

·       How insulin resistance changes your body's ability to handle carbohydrates

·       Why water, oxygen, vitamins, and even healthy foods can become harmful in the wrong amounts or circumstances

·       Why some people thrive eating almost no carbs while others improve their blood sugar eating considerably more

·       How reducing total energy intake can improve metabolic health through different dietary approaches

·       Why we care more about your A1C, muscle, body composition, and long-term health than which diet tribe you belong to

And yes, we even get into a little debate about whether making your own glucose puts extra stress on the body.

The bottom line?

We're not anti-carb. We're anti-bad blood sugar.

If eliminating carbohydrates helps you improve your health and you can sustain it, fantastic.

If you can improve your blood sugar while eating lentils, berries, yogurt, or other carbohydrate-containing foods, that's fantastic too.

The goal isn't to eat as few carbs as humanly possible. The goal is to find an approach that improves your metabolic health and that you can actually sustain.
