Tundra FM Special: Brewers, Fifty-Seven Winters

Episode 170 Published 5 days, 7 hours ago
Description

The Milwaukee Brewers are World Series champions for the first time ever, and Brick Lombardi opens up the booth for a special night for Wisconsin. Fifty-seven seasons, a seven-game heartbreak in 1982, a Game 7 in 2018, and last night the wait finally ended.

You'll hear Wait for the Thaw, a slow-build indie folk rock song about waiting out the long cold, and The Cheesehead Bump, for everybody who bumped a stranger in the street last night, plus Brick's story about a pennant that sat in a closet for eight years. Then the world premiere of Fifty-Seven Winters, a brand-new vintage soul song with horns and a church organ about a porch radio that finally brought one home. And with Carolina at Lambeau tonight, Brick has a message for the football team.

[Intro]
(organ swell, soft horns)
Mm, turn it up, turn it up...

[Verse 1]
Got a radio on the porch rail,
Silver dial gone dim,
Heard it break my heart in eighty-two,
Seven games, and then nothing again.
Lake wind coming off the water,
Snow on County Stadium's seats,
I kept the batteries fresh, Lord,
Every summer, every losing streak.

[Pre-Chorus]
And the old voice told me, wait, son,
Some springs take their time.

[Chorus]
Fifty-seven winters,
Fifty-seven springs,
I kept on believing
In the hope a summer brings.
Now the horns are playing,
Milwaukee, let it ring,
Fifty-seven winters,
And tonight we're the kings.

[Verse 2]
Eighteen took us to the doorstep,
Then the door slammed shut,
I rolled the old flag up in plastic,
Put it on the closet shelf, shut.
And the old voice went home, Lord,
Never got to call this one,
So I turned that radio up for him
When the last out was done.

[Pre-Chorus]
And I swear I heard him laughing,
Somewhere down the line.

[Chorus]
Fifty-seven winters,
Fifty-seven springs,
I kept on believing
In the hope a summer brings.
Now the horns are playing,
Milwaukee, let it ring,
Fifty-seven winters,
And tonight we're the kings.

[Bridge]
(organ alone, choir hums)
From Kenosha to the Northwoods,
From the mill town to the bay,
Every porch light in Wisconsin
Is burning up today.
(choir) Burning up today!

[build]

[Final Chorus]
(full choir, horns blasting)
FIFTY-SEVEN WINTERS!
(Fifty-seven springs!)
We kept on believing,
(Oh, we believed!)
Now the horns are playing,
MILWAUKEE, LET IT RING!
Fifty-seven winters,
And TONIGHT WE'RE THE KINGS!

[Outro]
(horns trade with the lead)
Brew Crew... Brew Crew...
Turn it up for the old man...
(organ fade)
[fade out]
