Concepts and Unity - Locke, Kant, and Goethe
Description
What are concepts or general ideas? And how are they acquired? Professor James Conant begins by discussing these questions in relation to the views of John Locke and his theory of abstraction. He then goes on to discuss Kant's critique of Locke and the empiricists, as well as some issues that arise in Kant, including a famous issue in section 77 of the Critique of Judgment, as well as a problem that was later brought to light by Wittgenstein in his famous discussion of rule-following.
