Description
James Brooke had become the first White Rajah of Sarawak, but winning a kingdom was one thing. Holding on to it would prove considerably more difficult.
In this second episode, we enter the violent and turbulent years that followed Brooke's rise to power. British warships venture into Borneo's rivers, accusations of piracy lead to a devastating confrontation, and an extraordinary Iban warrior named Rentap emerges as one of the Rajah's most formidable enemies.
Known as the World Shaker, Rentap refuses to bow to Brooke's authority, retreating into the mountains to defend a seemingly impregnable fortress. Meanwhile, a bloody uprising by Chinese gold miners brings Brooke's kingdom to the brink of collapse, forcing the Rajah to flee for his life as Kuching burns.
It is a story of ambition, betrayal, extraordinary courage and the uncomfortable line between bringing peace to a country and conquering it.
And at its heart lies a remarkable contrast between two men. One became a king. The other became a legend.
Join me for Part Two of The White Rajahs, as we discover just how close James Brooke came to losing everything.
