More On The Alleged Serial Killer In Austin

Published 8 hours ago
Description
Authorities in Austin, Texas, launched a search for a suspected serial killer in August 2024 after DNA evidence connected the murders of two women killed six years apart. The investigation centered on 34-year-old Alyssa Ann Rivera, whose body was discovered inside an abandoned house on Metcalfe Road in Austin on June 21, 2024, and 28-year-old Alba Jenisse Aviles, who was found murdered inside her vehicle in Bastrop County on April 14, 2018. Both women had been strangled and sexually assaulted, and investigators identified striking similarities between the crime scenes. On August 7, forensic testing established that DNA recovered in Rivera's case matched evidence collected during the investigation into Aviles's murder, indicating that the same unidentified individual was connected to both killings. The discovery transformed what authorities had initially considered separate homicide investigations into a search for a suspected serial predator who had apparently avoided identification for at least six years.

Investigators released surveillance footage showing Rivera walking with an unidentified man shortly before her death and asked the public to help identify him. Police described the person of interest as a short Hispanic man but acknowledged that they had not established his identity or conclusively determined whether he was the killer. The DNA profile recovered from the crime scenes failed to produce a match in the FBI's national criminal DNA database, leaving investigators without an identified suspect despite strong forensic evidence linking the two murders. Authorities also acknowledged the possibility that the individual could be responsible for additional killings, although they had not connected him to any other cases. Police emphasized that the investigation was separate from the widely publicized speculation surrounding a possible serial killer responsible for bodies discovered in Austin's Lady Bird Lake. The Austin Police Department and Bastrop County Sheriff's Office continued working together to identify the suspect and determine whether the two murders represented the full extent of his crimes.
