Why Do We Keep Wanting to Return to What We Prayed to Escape .
Published 1Â day, 14Â hours ago
Description
Main Scriptures: Exodus 16:1–12 and Numbers 11:4–6
Why do we sometimes miss the very things we once begged God to deliver us from? When the Israelites became hungry in the wilderness, they began remembering the food they had eaten in Egypt while forgetting the suffering of slavery. Their freedom was real, but the discomfort of their new reality made their past seem better than it truly was.
We do something similar when we miss an unhealthy relationship, an old addiction, or a lifestyle we once prayed to leave behind. We remember the pleasure but forget the pain, romanticise the familiar, and begin questioning our decisions when the journey forward becomes difficult.
The Israelites' story reminds us that being uncomfortable in your new season does not automatically mean your old season was better. Sometimes, we would rather return to familiar pain than face unfamiliar growth. Yet God continued providing for the Israelites even when they struggled to trust Him.
The lesson is not to pretend your past had no good moments, but to remember the whole truth about it. You can miss something without needing to return to it. You can feel tempted to go backwards while still choosing to move forward with God.
Reflect on this: Are you genuinely missing what you left behind, or are you struggling with the discomfort of becoming someone new?
