In this episode of 6G Agenda, we return to Bill Cooper’s Mystery Babylon series to investigate one of history’s most feared and misunderstood secretive religious movements: the Assassins.

Emerging from the Nizari Ismaili branch of Shia Islam during the medieval period, the Assassins established a network of fortified strongholds and became notorious for targeted political killings that challenged powerful rulers, military commanders and religious authorities. But who were the Assassins beyond the legends?

Following Bill Cooper’s exploration of the subject, we examine the history of Hassan-i Sabbah, Alamut Castle and the Nizari Ismaili community, separating historical evidence from the legends that later surrounded the order. We explore the stories of secret gardens, intoxicating substances, elaborate initiation rituals and followers allegedly willing to sacrifice their lives at a command. How much of this imagery comes from reliable historical sources, and how much developed through hostile accounts, political propaganda and later European retellings?

From there, we investigate the broader themes that make the Assassins relevant to the Mystery Babylon series: secret knowledge, religious authority, political influence, clandestine networks and the relationship between spiritual allegiance and earthly power. We also examine how the image of the Assassins evolved over the centuries, influencing later ideas about secret societies, covert operations and organizations that supposedly operate behind the visible structures of political and religious authority. Were the Assassins simply a medieval political-religious movement using targeted violence to survive against much stronger enemies—or did the legends surrounding them help create a template for how people imagine secret orders and hidden power?

As always, we revisit Cooper’s claims while investigating the history behind them, exploring the line between documented events, inherited mythology and the larger theories that connect secret societies to the continuing story of Mystery Babylon.
