A single PostgreSQL table with BM25 and HNSW indexes, paired with Claude through an MCP tool server, scored 0.418 exact match and 0.564 accuracy on a 500-question MuSiQue sample and achieved 0.556 mean nDCG@10 on BRIGHT. The experiments challenge the assumption that stronger RAG systems always need planners, knowledge graphs, rerankers, or fine-tuned retrievers. An evaluation loop rejected most additions, while retaining domain-specific prompts and concept sketches where retrieval genuinely struggled. The central argument: keep retrieval architecture minimal, test every added component, and let improving models handle more of the work.
