Description
Supernatural Season 9, Episode 21, King of the Damned recap đź‘‘ Abaddon brings a guest from 1723, Crowley sweet-talks a hellhound over speakerphone, and Dean finally gets his hands on the First Blade again, on Denim-wrapped Nightmares, a Supernatural rewatch podcast.
With Abaddon’s army supposedly growing and Metatron’s followers popping up everywhere, everyone is scrambling to tie up loose ends. Cas, now “Commander” Cas, calls in the boys to question one of Metatron’s wannabe recruits. Meanwhile, Crowley gets an unwelcome visit and a bargaining chip that hits close to home.
Episode Highlights:
- Leith, Scotland, 1723: Abaddon in modern clothes with her Josie Sands hair, and a party crasher who gets the hook
- Ezra brags in a bar that Metatron picked him, and the awkward pauses are agonizing
- Commander Cas in that stiff khaki coat, plus a burgundy suit so fabulous the hosts were sure he’d matter more
- Crowley’s demons are business professional, and “Who’s with me?” gets one very unwelcome answer
- An interrogation shot from below and above until you feel interrogated too
- “I made it to the final round”: Ezra did not make Metatron’s cut
- Crowley explains his three-inch deal to a 1723 visitor who thinks this must be heaven
- Juliet the hellhound gets a speakerphone call from Papa
- The blade’s hiding place (not a skeleton, unfortunately), and Sam volunteers for body cavity duty
- “Poughkeepsie,” and Dean keeps it to himself
Written by Brad Buckner and Eugenie Ross-Leming and directed by P.J. Pesce. Berly loved the director’s angles in the interrogation and one final shot that looks like a painting. LA loved the Crowley and Gavin dynamic, with both of them fighting off their affection for each other. Berly’s favorite is the hellhound scene, which was unnecessary, she admits, and adorable. The big complaint is that it feels like a rush to tie up loose ends. After half a season of demon army building, where was the army? The gore award goes to a very bloody face, with the coat hook close behind. Plus, LA has a Titanic moment she will never live down.
In the lore segment, LA revisits the Abaddon lore from season 8's Clip Show with a summary from GotQuestions.org. In Revelation 9:11, Abaddon (Hebrew for “place of destruction”) is also called Apollyon (Greek for “the destroyer”), and she’s king over a horde of demonic locusts that rise from a smoking abyss when the fifth angel blows his trumpet. Scripture seems to treat Abaddon as one of Satan’s underlings rather than Satan himself. Plus, Apollyon shows up in John Bunyan’s The Pilgrim’s Progress, and LA really lightens the mood at the end.
“No one in the history of torture has been tortured with torture like the torture you’ll be tortured with.” – Crowley
