Description
What does it really take to change your life? Identity change starts with changing what you believe about yourself, your worth, and what you are allowed to choose. You can set new goals, create a vision board, and promise yourself that things will be different, but lasting personal growth requires more than wanting a different outcome. It requires becoming someone whose beliefs, decisions, habits, and boundaries align with the life you want to create.
In Week 4 of the Great Lock-In, we're talking about identity, self-trust, personal development, and why you can want a completely different life while still being attached to the identity that got you here.
If you've ever struggled to set boundaries, prioritize yourself without feeling guilty, stop people-pleasing, or make decisions without worrying about what everyone else will think, this episode is for you.
For years, I believed that being good, agreeable, accomplished, and useful was how I earned love and proved my worth. I knew how to show up for everybody else, but I had to learn how to show up for myself. After calling off my wedding and starting over alone at 32, I had to confront the beliefs that shaped my relationships, decisions, and sense of self.
That season forced me to rebuild my life, find myself outside of a romantic relationship, and learn that choosing my own well-being did not make me selfish. Through therapy, coaching, boundaries, and a deeper spiritual connection, I began to understand that becoming a different version of yourself isn't about proving that you're worthy. It's about no longer living as if your worth is something you have to prove.
In this episode of The Main Character Experience, we're exploring how identity influences behavior, why old beliefs can keep you stuck in familiar patterns, and how small everyday decisions can help you build self-trust and create lasting change.
In this episode, we discuss:
- Identity change and personal growth: Why setting new goals isn't always enough to create lasting change.
- Self-worth and self-esteem: How the belief that you must earn love, approval, or acceptance can shape your identity.
- People-pleasing and perfectionism: Why being the dependable, agreeable, high-performing person can make it difficult to prioritize your own needs.
- Setting boundaries without guilt: Learning to say no, communicate your needs, and stop treating your preferences like they require a courtroom defense.
- Choosing yourself: What it looks like to make decisions based on your well-being instead of a romantic relationship or the image you want other people to have of you.
- Building self-trust: How keeping small promises to yourself creates evidence that you can rely on yourself.
- Becoming your best self: How to grow beyond the version of yourself you developed to survive without shaming the woman who got you here.
- Creating a life you genuinely enjoy: Why your daily choices matter just as much as the goals you say you want to achieve.
Your Great Lock-In Week 4 challenge
This week, pay attention to the beliefs behind your choices.
1. Identify the belief. What are you telling yourself that keeps you repeating an old pattern? Do you believe you have to keep everyone happy, get everything right, or earn permission before choosing yourself?
2. Choose one different action. Practice a boundary, make a decision without seeking unnecessary approval, say no when something doesn't work for you, or follow through on something you promised yourself.
3. Reflect on the evidence. At the end of the week, ask yourself: What did I do this week that my old identity probably wouldn't have done?
