Episode Details

A potentially significant detail emerged in the early investigation into the murders of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin when a neighbor said the front door of the King Road residence was standing open around 8:30 a.m. on November 13, 2022. The reported sighting came several hours after investigators believed the four students had been killed and more than three hours before police were called to the home. At the time, authorities had not publicly established how the killer entered or exited the residence, making the status of the front door another unresolved element in the developing timeline.

Moscow Police Chief James Fry said the report was news to him when asked about it and declined to confirm whether investigators had verified the neighbor’s account. The disclosure came during a period when police were still working through witness statements, surveillance footage and physical evidence while searching for a white Hyundai Elantra believed to have been near the home around the time of the murders. The open-door report was never presented publicly as a confirmed part of the prosecution’s case, but it added another unanswered question to the chaotic hours between the killings and the eventual 911 call.
