Lift the cup and peppermint rises first, but wait—there is something softer underneath, a warmth like hay and honey, and then a fruit that isn’t there. The name for it has travelled through languages and centuries, shaped by what people thought they found. Sometimes a thing is known not for what it is, but for what it leaves behind.
