Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christian... - When the Enemy Wants You Afraid

Published 16 hours ago
Description

For over thirty years, Saint John Vianney experienced spiritual attacks while serving as a spiritual director and ministering to the sick and orphans. The nights were worst. Knocking. Strange sounds. Physical disturbances. Visitors would witness these events and ask if he was afraid.

He was not.

John knew the Lord was his shield and refuge. He understood that the attacks were, in a strange way, evidence that his work for the Kingdom mattered. Satan could try to hinder him. But nothing could stop the Lord from working, and no one could snatch John from God’s hand. As he said, the demon is very cunning, but he is not strong.

Most of us will not face what John Vianney faced. But we are all susceptible to the enemy’s schemes in some form. And one of his most reliable tactics is simply to make us afraid. Afraid that God does not care. Afraid that our salvation is uncertain. Afraid that what threatens us tonight is stronger than the One who stands between us and it.

Fear is where the enemy wants us to live, because fear makes us more vulnerable to his attacks.

Ephesians 6 does not pretend the spiritual battle is not real. It names it plainly and then gives us what we need for it: the full armor of God. Faith, the assurance of salvation, prayer, the Word of God. Not because these things make us immune to difficulty, but because they ground us in the truth about who is actually in charge. Our battle is not against flesh and blood but against powers of darkness. And our Lord, the Light of the world, cannot be overcome by darkness. Nothing is stronger than the One who lives inside us and walks beside us.

The enemy is cunning but not strong. The Cross says so. The empty tomb confirms it.

Tonight, stand firm in that. The devil is a defeated enemy. And the God who keeps watch over you neither slumbers nor sleeps.

Ponder Tonight

Fear is one of the enemy’s most effective and most common tools, not because it is powerful but because we are often unaware of its source. Naming it for what it is, and returning to the truth of who God is, disarms it.

The armor of God in Ephesians 6 is not decorative. Each piece addresses a real and specific vulnerability. Asking which piece is most needed in the current season is a worthy and practical form of prayer.

Saint John Vianney’s response to thirty years of spiritual attack was not bravado but settled confidence in the Lord’s protection. That kind of unshakeable trust is built over time, in the Word, in prayer, and in the accumulated memory of God’s faithfulness.

The Cross is the decisive statement about who has won this battle. Colossians 2:15 describes Jesus disarming the powers of darkness through it. Whatever fear arrives tonight, it faces an already-defeated enemy.

Tonight’s Scripture

“Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.” — Ephesians 6:10-11, NLT

Your Evening Prayer

Living Word and Light of the World,

You defeated the powers of darkness through dying on the cross and being raised to life again. The devil is a defeated enemy, one You will crush at Your return. For now, Lord, I need Your strength to protect me against the attacks of the one who wants to make me afraid.

Help me put on the armor of God and stand firm in my trust in You. I know that in Your light, all things must bow, even the powers of evil. Be my shield and strength tonight.

In Your name, Christ, I pray. Amen.
