Description
Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 20 and Proverbs 20:21–30. The reflection follows Saul’s continued hostility toward David, leaving his son Jonathan caught between loyalty to his father and his friendship with David. Jonathan tests Saul’s intentions and relays them to David through a signal involving arrows; when Saul’s rage boils over, he hurls a spear at his own son. Jonathan sides decisively with David. The two friends make covenant vows, with David promising to care for Jonathan’s household, and they part in tears as David continues to flee.
Proverbs 20:21–30 emphasizes patience and trusting the Lord rather than seeking revenge, honest dealing like fair weights and scales, God’s direction over human plans, and caution about rash vows. It also describes a wise king separating out the wicked through winnowing imagery, and notes that God’s light searches the human heart. The discussion ties that winnowing picture to the final separation of the righteous and the wicked at Christ’s return, drawing on passages like 1 Peter 3:9 and Romans 12 to make the case that believers leave vengeance to God and respond to evil with kindness — a hard calling, but not one that means passively allowing harm.
