The ruling Progressive Conservatives were grappling with a leadership shakeup as Kim Campbell succeeded longtime Prime Minister Brian Mulroney. The PCs were set to face off against the Liberal party led by Jean Chrétien, along with the NDP, Bloc Québécois and Reform parties.
