Mega Edition: Chad Daybell Is Found Guilty On All Counts (10/25/26)
Published 12 hours ago
Description
Chad Daybell was found guilty on May 30, 2024, after an Ada County jury deliberated for roughly six hours following a seven-week trial. Jurors convicted him on every count submitted to them, including first-degree murder in the deaths of 16-year-old Tylee Ryan, 7-year-old JJ Vallow and his wife, Tammy Daybell, as well as conspiracy charges, grand theft and insurance fraud. Prosecutors had argued that Chad, Lori Vallow Daybell and Alex Cox operated as part of a conspiracy driven by money, sex and power, using Chad’s apocalyptic teachings and his system of labeling people “light” or “dark” to justify removing people who stood in the way. The state tied Chad to the crimes through his communications with Lori and Alex, financial evidence, Tammy’s life-insurance proceeds, the burial of JJ and Tylee on his property, cellphone evidence placing Alex at the burial areas and Chad’s own statements and conduct before and after the deaths. The defense tried to shift responsibility toward Lori and Alex and emphasized the lack of Chad’s DNA on the children, but the jury rejected that argument and found the circumstantial case proved his participation beyond a reasonable doubt.
The verdict represented a complete rejection of Chad’s effort to portray himself as someone who had been manipulated or set up by Lori and Alex. Jurors accepted the prosecution’s argument that Chad did not need to physically carry out every killing himself to be criminally responsible because he had participated in the conspiracies that led to the deaths. The guilty verdicts also meant the case immediately moved into a separate death-penalty phase, because prosecutors had sought capital punishment for the murders. Chad declined to testify during the trial and later chose not to present mitigating evidence during sentencing. Two days after the guilty verdict, on June 1, the same jury unanimously determined that the aggravating circumstances justified death, and Judge Steven Boyce formally imposed death sentences on the murder and conspiracy counts. The verdict closed the guilt phase of a case that had begun with two missing children in 2019 and ultimately established Chad Daybell as legally responsible for the deaths of JJ, Tylee and Tammy.
