The Plate That Survives the Oven but Not the Floor (Chemistry Level 8)
Description
That's what we're chasing: first, what makes ceramics so tough and so fragile at the same time. Then, how people beat that weakness by joining two materials so each one covers for the other.
Composites solve the dropped-plate problem without inventing a new substance. You keep one material's strength and borrow another's to cover its weak spot. The listener can now say that ceramics are hard, brittle, heat-resistant and insulating, and made by heating clay. They can also say that in a composite the matrix holds and the reinforcement strengthens, and give an example of each.
