The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes looked every bit like the best team in the country, overwhelming the Pittsburgh Panthers 52-16 at Hard Rock Stadium behind a historic masterpiece from Malachi Toney.

Toney broke Miami’s single-game receptions record with 16 catches for 194 yards and three touchdowns. After producing 154 yards and two scores against Florida State, Toney became the first player in Miami history to record at least 150 receiving yards and two touchdowns in consecutive games. He now has 66 receptions for 952 yards and 11 touchdowns through seven games this season. Bleacher Report

Darian Mensah was sensational despite facing consistent pressure from Pitt’s defensive front. Mensah completed 31 of 37 passes for 387 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions, repeatedly demonstrating the pocket presence, accuracy and composure that have made him one of the nation’s premier quarterbacks.

Miami seized control with a 21-point second quarter. After Pitt cut the lead to 17-7, Mensah found Toney for a crucial third-and-18 conversion and then hit him for a 53-yard touchdown. J.J. Dunnigan forced a fumble on Pitt’s next possession, Justin Scott recovered it, and Gavin Mueller caught his first touchdown as a Hurricane to give Miami a 31-7 halftime lead.

The Hurricanes finished with 503 total yards, converted 10 of 15 third downs and did not commit a turnover. Miami’s defense forced the game’s only takeaway, held Pitt to four third-down conversions in 12 attempts and produced two fourth-down stops—including an impressive goal-line stand by the reserves.

On the day Miami honored the legendary 2001 national championship team and played its first game as the AP’s No. 1 team since 2002, the Hurricanes delivered a performance filled with championship swagger. Miami improves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the ACC.

Jim “GRIES” Grieshaber and Alex Dono break down Toney’s historic afternoon, Mensah’s masterclass, the second-quarter avalanche, Miami’s third-down dominance and what this performance means for the Hurricanes’ national championship pursuit.
