Yarrow (Achillea millefolium): The Ancient Herb of Wounds, Protection & Divination | Kari Balderston
Description
A plant for the wound. A plant for the boundary. A plant people have turned to when seeking answers.
With its finely divided leaves and clusters of small flowers, yarrow might seem like an unassuming part of the meadow. Yet its story reaches into herbal medicine, mythology, folk magic, and the deeply human desire to feel healed, protected, and connected to something beyond ourselves.
In this episode of Rooted & Wild, I’m joined by Kari Balderston, herbalist, intuitive healer, and founder of ApotheKari Healing Arts, for a conversation about yarrow, Achillea millefolium. Together, we explore the different ways people have understood and worked with this plant, from its longstanding association with wounds to its place in traditions of protection and divination.
What does it mean to work with an herb beyond knowing its uses? How do we approach the relationship between a plant’s physical properties and the spiritual meanings people have given it? And why do certain plants continue to capture our attention across generations?
Our conversation brings practical herbalism into dialogue with intuitive experience, making room for both the tangible plant and the stories surrounding it. We explore yarrow as an invitation to notice what grows around us, become more attentive to our own boundaries, and consider how caring for ourselves can involve body, mind, and spirit.
In this episode, we explore:
• Getting to know yarrow: Its botanical identity, distinctive appearance, and place in the landscape
• Wounds and traditional herbal practice: Why yarrow has become associated with tending injuries and supporting the body
• The stories held in a name: Its connection with Achilles and the intersection of mythology and plant medicine
• Protection and personal boundaries: Yarrow’s place in folk traditions and contemporary spiritual practice
• Divination and intuitive guidance: The ways this herb has been associated with seeking insight and understanding
• Working with plants as a relationship: Bringing observation, curiosity, and respect into herbal practice
