Description
The Office of Personnel Management's February 2026 final rule created a new Schedule Policy/Career category, making roughly 50,000 federal positions eligible for reclassification, and a June 2026 executive order reclassified about 8,000 of them, mostly senior roles. Unions are challenging the changes in court, affected staff lose Merit Systems Protection Board appeal rights, and reversing the policy would require new rulemaking.
