Episode Details

The Houston Astros’ GM search is heating up, with Milwaukee Brewers assistant general manager Matt Kleine emerging as the reported leading candidate. Brett “Htown Wheelhouse” Chancey breaks down Kleine’s résumé, the other contenders and the decisions facing owner Jim Crane on this episode of Locked On Astros.

Could Kleine help reshape Houston’s roster, strengthen player development and lead the search for the next Astros manager? We examine his experience in scouting, roster construction, contract negotiations and financial planning—and why clear authority matters for whoever gets the job. Plus, we discuss internal candidates Gavin Dickey and Charles Cook and the broader search across MLB front offices.

Then, an Astros postseason connection returns to the spotlight: Jason Lane is back in the World Series as the Brewers’ offense and strategy coordinator. We revisit his home run and final-out catch in the 2005 NLCS clincher, what Houston’s first National League pennant meant and his remarkable journey from outfielder to pitcher to longtime coach.

Finally, Astros prospect Nick Monistere is making up for lost development time in the Arizona Fall League. After sports hernia surgery interrupted his first full professional season, the 2025 fourth-round pick has an opportunity to regain his rhythm. We discuss his encouraging Fayetteville numbers, difficult return at High-A Asheville and what to watch next.
