Jeffrey Epstein And The Sealed Indictment
Published 15 hours ago
Description
The sealed federal indictment returned against Jeffrey Epstein on July 2, 2019, charged him with sex-trafficking conspiracy and sex trafficking of minors for conduct prosecutors alleged occurred primarily between 2002 and 2005. Prosecutors said Epstein sexually exploited and abused dozens of underage girls at his Manhattan townhouse and Palm Beach residence, with some victims as young as 14. The indictment described a recurring system in which girls were brought to Epstein ostensibly to provide massages, after which the encounters became sexual and Epstein paid them hundreds of dollars in cash. Prosecutors alleged that Epstein knew many of the girls were minors and deliberately maintained a supply of young victims by paying some of them to recruit additional girls. The indictment also alleged that employees and associates helped facilitate the operation by contacting victims, arranging appointments and helping keep Epstein’s residences available for the encounters.
The timing and secrecy were significant. The grand jury returned the indictment under seal on July 2, allowing federal authorities to keep the charges hidden while preparing to arrest Epstein. He was taken into custody at Teterboro Airport in New Jersey on July 6 after returning from France, and investigators executed a search warrant at his Manhattan residence the same day. The indictment remained sealed until July 8, when Magistrate Judge Henry Pitman ordered it unsealed and Epstein appeared in federal court and pleaded not guilty. Unlike the extraordinarily lenient resolution of the earlier Florida investigation, the 2019 indictment treated Epstein’s alleged conduct as a federal sex-trafficking operation and carried the possibility of decades in prison. It also explicitly alleged that Epstein had not acted entirely alone, describing employees and associates who facilitated his access to victims, although the indictment itself charged only Epstein.
