December 2008. Dr. Watson and Sherlock Holmes share a converted craftsman above Echo Park, and the rent is two weeks short. Watson has made Holmes promise to take no cases until they are current. Then the doorbell rings after ten. Eleanor Fairchild has driven straight through from Rancho Mirage with a story she cannot let rest: her late father's estate is being sold lot by lot on a late-night channel, and the next sale is tomorrow. She brings an envelope holding a buyer's certificate dated this month and signed with the name of Admiral Holloway, a man years in his grave. Holmes calls it a dead man's name still out working, and he takes the case, bargain or no bargain. Watson grumbles and drives. That night the two of them watch the broadcast together, and Holmes studies it the way other men study a chessboard. In the morning Mrs. Fairchild reads aloud the line at the foot of the certificate, which says the lots were sold by the widow. Her mother died eleven years ago, and her father never remarried. The admiral framed his prints and dusted them, and he never priced one. The trail leads to his study in Rancho Mirage and a box of receipts she could not bring herself to open. Who put the admiral's name to that paper?
From the series Holmes LA: a real Los Angeles crime reimagined as a modern Sherlock Holmes radio mystery, performed by a full multi-voice AI cast with an original score and sound design.
Loosely inspired by a real Los Angeles case of the 2000s. All names, characters, dialogue and events are fictional; the words, actions, motives and private lives of every character — including an admiral's daughter, gallery people, auction bidders, the investigators and the police — are invented for drama, and so is the solution of the mystery. Where a real city, state, public body or newspaper is mentioned, its part in this story is invented; the gallery and the television channel named in it are invented too. This is a work of fiction, not a factual account of any real person or institution. No real person is portrayed, and no real individual, company or organisation is accused of any act shown here.
Setting: Los Angeles, December 2008 — with Echo Park and Rancho Mirage.
