October 22, 2026 - 1 Samuel 17 & Proverbs 19:25-29

Description

Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 17 and Proverbs 19:25–29. The reflection follows Israel and the Philistines as they face off in the Valley of Elah, where Goliath has mocked the God of Israel for forty days. The young shepherd David steps forward with only a sling and a staff, trusting that the Lord is greater than any enemy. The discussion lingers on David’s zeal for God’s glory as the real engine behind his courage, pointing listeners away from fear of trials and toward confidence in God when He is for them.

The episode also addresses a listener question about whether God can be near sin and whether He is present in hell. It traces God’s ongoing interaction with sinners through Scripture, explains that God expelled Adam and Eve from Eden not because He can’t be near sin, but because sin severed their fellowship with Him, and notes that His justice requires sin to be dealt with—pointing forward to the need for a Redeemer. On hell, it describes God’s presence there as one of justice and wrath rather than blessing or favor, with hell best understood as the absence of God’s grace.

Proverbs 19:25–29 turns to the value of correction: those who receive it grow in wisdom, while those who refuse instruction drift into folly. The passage’s warnings about scoffers, false witnesses, and the wicked connect to the hardship of trusting one’s own wisdom instead of God’s.
