Episode Details

I examine Steve Whitkoff’s meeting with Vladimir Putin at the Constantine Palace in St. Petersburg after Whitkoff met Volodymyr Zelensky in Oslo alongside the leaders of Norway and Finland. Whitkoff urged renewed U.S.-Ukraine-Russia trilateral talks, while Putin paired Ukraine with offers of fertilizer, economic cooperation, Iran diplomacy, and a possible Trump meeting in China.

I focus on the gap between gestures and concrete commitments. Russia released American Stephen Hubbard, and Whitkoff praised Putin’s humanitarianism, but what reciprocity might Moscow expect? I also assess the proposed 40,000-ton Russian diesel shipment to the United States—a cargo described as only a few hours of U.S. diesel consumption—and the wider push for sanctions relief. The core test is straightforward: which strikes stop, when do they stop, who verifies compliance, and what security guarantees would Ukraine receive? Without specific answers, negotiations can prolong hope while Russia continues the war.
