It started with the pro-Ramaswamy ad featuring Amy Acton's estranged mother, who sided with her husband, Acton's abuser, in court when Acton was 12. Acton had already spoken publicly about her childhood. She became a physician, led the Ohio Department of Health, and is now running for governor. And the first time she has seen her mother in 48 years is in an attack ad.

It took Hawk most of the day to understand why it hit so hard. His own relationship with his late mother was complicated: a gifted nurse, a fierce advocate for her kids, the source of his empathy and his curiosity, and also the person who hurt him most. They went years without contact before reconciling at the end of her life. Nothing close to what Acton endured, but the betrayal of a parent leaves its own mark.

Layered on top of it all: Ted Nugent opening for Donald Trump, the Epstein files, and a country that keeps excusing harm to women and children.
