Can Your Laptop Borrow Your Desktop's RAM?

Episode 6187 Published 1 week, 4 days ago
Description
A laptop down to two gigabytes of free memory, a desktop one room over with sixty-four gigabytes doing nothing. What if the laptop could swap pages out over the home network and borrow the desktop's idle RAM? The pieces exist — nbdkit's memory plugin, nbd-client, a swap device that looks exactly like a local disk — and the setup is only a handful of steps. The catch is in the physics: a swap-in is a single frozen page fetch, and what matters is one round trip, not bandwidth. Wired-to-wired, that round trip is still roughly eight times slower than the NVMe drive already sitting in the laptop, which is itself almost empty. Add the kernel's decade-old network-swap deadlock problem, a RAM-backed store that vanishes on reboot, and a Wi-Fi tail that puts your slowest memory tier on the least predictable link, and the idea gets interesting in a very specific way.
