October 21, 2026 - 1 Samuel 16 & Proverbs 19:17-24

Description

Today’s reading covers 1 Samuel 16 and Proverbs 19:17–24. The reflection follows Samuel being sent to Bethlehem to anoint Israel’s next king from among Jesse’s sons — after seven brothers are passed over, the youngest, David, is chosen, and the Spirit of the Lord comes upon him. Saul, by contrast, is left tormented by a harmful spirit, a decline the discussion ties back to the covenant curses for disobedience in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28. David is then brought into Saul’s service, playing the lyre for him and becoming his armor-bearer, setting the stage for the story to come.

Proverbs 19:17–24 moves through wisdom on generosity to the poor as lending to the Lord, the hard but hopeful work of parental discipline, the need to stay teachable, and submitting our plans to the Lord’s purposes. It also touches on steadfast love, honesty, and the security found in the fear of the Lord, closing with a warning against sluggishness. The episode closes, as always, looking ahead to the rest of David’s story and the reminder that God’s Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
