Laos Folk-Lore of Farther India — Part 1: A Child of the Woods and Other Tales
Description
Part One of the shelf: six tales from Laos Folk-Lore of Farther India (New York: Fleming H. Revell Company, 1899) by Katherine Neville Fleeson, who lived among the Laos people, learned their language, and wrote these tales down as they were told to her, when they had never been written down before. Billed by collector and book, as tales of the Laos country in the old kingdom of Siam; not a survey of all the peoples of Laos, and no completeness is claimed. Fleeson's book holds forty-eight tales; eleven of its opening tales were set aside under this channel's standing rule and are named in the shelf register.
A Child of the Woods — a maiden who fled in anger into the jungle is guarded through the nights by a tiger and the wild beasts, until her heart cools and she comes home in honour. The Enchanted Mountain — the hunters tell of a spirit-kept lake on a lofty mountain-top, whose fowls no arrow can harm. The Mountain Spirits and the Stone Mortars — why great stone mortars stand scattered in a city street to this day. The Fatherless Birds — why the little birds cry "Paw hueey, paw hueey" over the plains, and lonely children echo them. The Faithful Wife — a gold image hidden in a boat, a wager, and the wife whose cleverness wins her husband back. The Giants' Mountain and the Temple — the giants carry a mountain-top halfway for the people's temple, then laugh at the people who would not do their share.
