Description
Apology in advance. I was starting with a cold when i preached this
John Wycliffe, the morning star of the Reformation, asked one question that still echoes today: “Where can I find truth?” In this sermon, Pastor Ian Thompson opens the Five Solas series with Sola Scriptura — Scripture Alone, exploring how Wycliffe’s passion for the Word of God reshaped England and still challenges the Church in our confused age.
Drawing from 2 Timothy 3:14–17 and Psalm 119:105, this message traces the hunger for God’s Word in a corrupt fourteenth‑century church, the rise of English Scripture through Wycliffe and the Lollards, and the enduring call for believers to anchor their lives in the lamp and light of God’s written Word.
Key themes include:
- The Bible as the only sure source of truth
- Wycliffe’s conviction that Scripture belongs to the people
- The Lollards’ ministry of reading, memorising, and teaching
- The danger of any authority that restricts access to God’s Word
- The Church standing on Scripture — not Scripture standing on the Church
This sermon encourages believers to become people of the Book, hearers and doers of the Word, and to stand with courage upon Scripture alone.
